Why are custom orthotics important?
Orthotics promote the proper alignment of the feet and allow muscles, bones and tendons of the feet and lower legs to function at their highest potential. Orthotics remove pressure from painful areas in the foot and ankle. They can restore balance, improve sports performance and alleviate pain in the lower back, knees, and hips. Custom made orthotics can provide relief from many types of foot pain including arch pain, pain caused by bunions, heel pain, plantar fasciitis, pain caused by running, walking or sports, and diabetic pain. They can also prevent calluses, corns, and ulcerations by offloading pressure from areas at risk and they allow you to engage longer when walking or doing sporting activities.
It is important to consult a podiatrist who has extensive knowledge of lower extremity biomechanics and orthopedic foot function as each individual has specific issues and needs. Orthotics are very sport specific and different sports require different orthotics (ski boots, cycling shoes, hiking boots, tennis shoes, etc.). Orthotics can be extremely effective in relieving foot pain and fatigue in older adults who may have developed arthritis in their feet. Orthotics may also be prescribed to children who have a foot deformity.
Prior to casting a thorough exam will be performed. A video gait analysis and/or radiographic exam will often be performed to further evaluate biomechanics and structural alignment.
